Wireless charging has led to several smartphones launches in recent years. Among the high-end devices that have this option integrated we find Google Nexus 5 and 6, Blackberry Classic and Priv and the Samsung S6 and S7 / S6 and S7 Edge. In addition, there are numerous models that, although do not integrate support for wireless charging, can be charged without cables using cases or adapters.

Charging process

The secret is based in the use of an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two objects. The wireless charging cradle has an induction coil to create an electromagnetic field that is utilized by the receiving device, which in turn has another coil to receive that energy and transform it into electric power to recharge the battery.

The main advantage is the convenience. However, unless you have a fast charging cradle (very recent technology) and a smartphone compatible with it, the process is very slow.

Qi vs PMA

Currently, there are two major players in the wireless charging segment for mobile devices. First is Qi, a standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium that became popular after being used in several state-of-the-art smartphones and in original solutions like some recent Ikea proposals (check them on the image below).

On the other hand, we have the Power Matters Alliance (PMA), which initially was based on induction charging (such as Qi), but after the alliance with the A4WP also supports magnetic resonance charging.

As in everything else in life, there is no perfect solution and each proposal has its advantages and disadvantages. Anyway, it seems that the wireless charge has not yet been affirmed at 100% since most of the manufacturers have opted for the fast charge.
